RANIER, MINNESOTA A Brief History
Ranier, a city in T. 71N, R. 24W (Koochiching), northeast of International Falls, was incorporated on March 24, 1908, and separated from the township on March 31, 1919. The first permanent resident was John Acey Holler in 1898, U.S. customs officer at Koochiching, where he moved in 1906, selling his homestead to Cook and O'Brien Company, which surveyed the townsite. The Duluth, Rainy Lake and Winnipeg Railway came in 1907 along with a building boom; the post office began in 1908. The city was named by officers of the railroad.
