Woody's Fairly Reliable Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Fishing:

So far it has been a very busy summer and we have had great fishing as evidenced by our website photo's and fishing report videos.  As you may imagine,  running a resort can be a very busy occupation and in high times it gets a little hectic.  We were having some problems with our news letter format and are just now straightening things out.  I will try to be more diligent as time goes on.

Walleye fishing has been great with just a few short slow periods but the best reef fishing is starting now.  Jigs/minnows is working well but a 1/4 oz splitshot 18" above a #6  hook tipped with a large leech has been dynamite!  I like using Gold VMC Baitholder Hooks and Water Gremlin splitshots.  For jigs I prefer  ¼ - 3/8 round head long shank hook in chartreuse, gold, silver or white.  Anchoring on top of a reef and casting out and around works best with the leech set-up.  A slow vertical presentation (bouncing it off the bottom) has worked best with the jigs circling the edges and working the inside turns and the ledges.

For pike try trolling purpledecent Rapala Taildancers  in deepwater around the reefs.  You may pick up a big “eye” too.  Bass are starting to hit the rock piles surrounded by deep water near the mouths of bays.  Try plastics, cranks and topwaters like a Skitterpop.

Island:

LeeAnne and I have to decided to sell our island so that we can focus more on the resort.   It is the only island for sale on the U.S. side of Rainy Lake!  It is also the only island on Rainy Lake with municipal sewer!!  This historical island was once owned by Pappy Heath, a most colorful character in Rainy Lake folklore who was well liked by the resorts and the locals as he provided them with his very own blend of “moonshine”.  The island features two crib docks and one floating dock.  The two year round cabins have electricity and were completely renovated in the past couple years.  There is a stone firepit and a stone barbecue pit is under construction.  There is a sand beach which is a delight.  There is a small workshop, rock gardens and too many other features to mention here that make this protected little island so unique that you just may want to visit it year round.   It is priced to sell @ $295,000. Check it out on the Lakehomes.Com Realty website.

That’s all for now,

Hope to see you soon,

Woody
